SYDNEY, Feb 21 AAP - Wigan coach Shaun Wane claims the decision to use the two-referee format in Saturday's World Club Challenge against the Sydney Roosters is a huge disadvantage to his side.

The NRL has operated with two on-field officials since 2009 but the system isn't used in the Super League and hasn't been adopted by the Rugby League International Federation.

Wane said he fought hard for the use of one referee, but the Roosters insisted that as the home side local rules should apply as they have when the game's been played in England.

"We're not used to it, and I am not happy about it," Wane told AAP on Friday.

"It's an advantage to them and a disadvantage to us, but we've been practising in training and I am sure the players will be fine with it on the day."

Despite his reservations for this game, Wane is a big fan of the two-ref system and would like to see it used in the Super League.

"I think it is a great idea, but I am just a bit upset about it being used in this game as my players have never experienced it before.

"To bring it in now for this game when it's not in the international rules is a bit harsh.

"But I think it would be a fantastic idea for us in the Super League as it would make referees more consistent and that is one thing we don't have in our country."

Despite his feelings on the move, Wane said his players aren't concerned and are fully focused on repeating the club's shock win over Brisbane 20 years ago.

"Every team needs to get the maximum out of every tackle and in this game we just have to do our job for 80 minutes," he said.

"If we do that then we can have no excuses."
