Wigan Warriors announce the signing of backrow forward John Bateman from Bradford Bulls on a three-year contract for seasons 2014, 2015 and 2016 with a further Club option for 2017.

Wigan will pay Bradford Bulls an undisclosed fee for the 20 year old who still had two years remaining on his contract with the Bulls.

Bateman is one of the most highly rated young Forwards in the country and made a real impact in the competition in 2012 both with Bradford and with the England Academy side who he Captained in Australia.

Bateman made his first team debut for the Bulls back in 2011 and his fine form the following year was recognised as he was awarded the Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year Award.

After an injury hit season in 2013 Bateman is now fully fit and will join the rest of the Warriors squad for pre-season training at Orrell later this month.

Speaking about the addition of Bateman, Chairman Ian Lenagan said;

"We are pleased to have signed such an exciting young player as John and he will be an excellent addition to our squad. He is one of the rising stars in Super League and just the sort of player who will flourish within our system. As with so many of our good young players he has signed a long term contract with us."

Warriors Rugby Manager, Kris Radlinski added;

“In John Bateman, we have a tremendous prospect. He has been tipped for the top in the game for some time and we are pleased to help him reach his potential. He is ambitious, hard- working and has a burning desire to succeed at the highest level.

“We intend to strip him down and build him back up, educating him on preparing his body for top grade Rugby League along the way. He has played a lot of Rugby at a young age and has taken a few bangs. We will be slow and thorough in his development and will not rush or pressure him. Our succession plan for the back row already includes, O'Loughlin, Hansen, Farrell, Hughes, Burke, Hopkins, Clubb and now Bateman and there will be great competition for selection - a very healthy situation for Wigan.”

Head Coach Shaun Wane commented;

"I am pleased to have acquired John, especially when he has attracted so much interest from other Super League Clubs. He is a player that I rate very highly. I also see lots of areas where he will improve. As he matures with us, he will be a good asset in our quest to continually challenge for honours."

On his signing with Wigan, John Bateman said;

“I am grateful to Wigan for giving me the opportunity to play at such a successful Club and I am looking forward to this new challenge in my career. I would like to thank everyone at Bradford for allowing me this opportunity and hope I can play my part in winning silverware with the Warriors.”
