SYDNEY, Feb 10 AAP - Their last season was a shocker but NSW Origin forward Aaron Woods says Wests Tigers are set to be a finals force this NRL season.

Woods showed his faith in the club's new board and coach Mick Potter by signing a new three-year deal with the club on Monday, keeping him there until at least the end of 2017, with an option on 2018.

And Woods, who was linked to a big money move to Manly, says Tigers fans have plenty to look forward to despite last year's 15th placing.

"There are a lot of young kids coming through, they bring a lot of enthusiasm to the place and the future is looking good," he said.

"I think we will be really competitive the next few years and if we don't make the eight this year we will have had a pretty bad year.

"It will be disappointing if we don't. We have had a good pre-season and we had a good hitout the other night.

"Our biggest problem is starting the season slowly, we just need to get on the front foot early.

Woods said he was happy to have his long-term future secured.

"I grew up in the area and as a local junior I was always keen to stay, so it's good to get the deal done. I'm excited about staying.

"You always look into it (going elsewhere) but at the end of the day I wanted to stay. There is plenty to look forward to."

The Tigers enjoyed a 32-8 trial win over Penrith at Camden on Saturday.

The Panthers were missing a number of stars though including Jamie Soward, Peter Wallace, Brent Kite and Jamal Idris, while the Tigers were without the likes of Robbie Farah, Keith Galloway. Liam Fulton and young gun Luke Brooks.

Potter welcomed the retention of Woods, who made his Origin debut last year.

"Aaron has been part of the fabric here since he started as a junior so it is good that he will be here a few more years," Potter said.

"He is a great acquisition to have.

"Woodsy likes to be around this area, he likes the people, he likes the fans and he wants to be at the Wests Tigers.

"It is a great boost for the club."
