COFFS HARBOUR, NSW, June 15 AAP - Knowing how fickle football fans can be, NSW veteran Anthony Watmough is encouraging his younger teammates to savour the spotlight in the countdown to State of Origin II on Wednesday night.

The Manly hardman has experienced the bitter taste of Origin series defeat five times and is lapping up the love of Blues fans following NSW's against-the-odds victory over Queensland in game one.

"I said to my wife the other week that when I went out to dinner with a few of the boys people that would never give me the time of the day were coming up and asking for photos," Watmough said on Sunday.

"Origin is a whole new level. You feel like a superstar running around town.

"It's good not to get smashed around as much and feel the love, which is a lot better than being hated on."

After preparing in relative isolation at a serene beachside resort in Coffs Harbour, the Blues returned to Sydney on Sunday and Watmough said the likes of Origin rookie Trent Hodkinson would certainly feel a rise in intensity.

"We've been pretty relaxed last camp and this camp," he said.

"We know when to switch off, which is a good thing trying to save a lot of energy.

"It'll be good for the young ones to get around Sydney and feel the vibe because it's different in Origin week.

"The people that hate you certainly turn a blind eye for a couple of weeks and learn to love you.

"It's pretty special and it will be pretty special for them these last couple of days."
