SYDNEY, July 13 AAP - Unwanted by Penrith in 2014, halfback Luke Walsh continues to showcase just what the Panthers and the NRL will be missing out on after guiding his side to an ugly 17-10 win over Parramatta on Saturday night.

While the victory against the last-placed Eels would have done little to scare this year's premiership contenders, the Panthers remain well and truly in the hunt for a finals berth, moving up to seventh courtesy of the win.

And it was Walsh who was at the centre of Penrith's best moments of the night.

His 40-20 was the catalyst for David Simmons' opening try before a pin-point chip nine minutes after halftime gifted his winger a second and the Panthers a lead they would not relinquish.

He iced the win with a field goal two minutes from fulltime to extend the margin beyond a converted try.

Walsh is off to Super League side St Helens next season having been deemed surplus to requirements at the foot of the mountains - the Panthers having signed St George Illawarra discard Jamie Soward for the next four seasons.

Backing up Simmons' seventh minute opener, skipper Kevin Kingston beat five defenders to give the visitors a 12-0 lead.

But the Eels, who gave up 50 points in a loss to Manly on Monday night, found some life of their own, getting within two points of Penrith courtesy of two tries - including a 60-metre intercept to Luke Kelly on the stroke of halftime.

Kelly looked lively wearing the Eels No.7 jumper, dumped halfback Chris Sandow in the stands after withdrawing from his NSW Cup assignment due to an achilles injury.
