coach Geoff Toovey believes Newcastle will need to bring their A-game this Sunday if they think they're any chance of running over the Northern beaches outfit.

Despite the Knights coming away with a solid 26-4 win over the Cronulla Sharks on Monday night, Toovey admits the opposition will need to step it up against his men this weekend.

"Newcastle played really well last night, it was excellent football to beat Cronulla," Toovey said.

"They got us last time when we played them up there, they really outplayed us, but hopefully we can put in a pretty good effort and performance this week.

"Defensively they were sound, especially after missing some key players through injury this year.

"I think they have found their groove a little bit, but it's a completely different ball game coming to Brookvale Oval and we'll be making it very difficult for them."

Currently sitting fourth on the ladder, Toovey is confident some of his injured troops will return to the park in Round 24 to bolster the side.

"We'll hopefully have Jason King and Steve Matai back, but in saying that, I thought the players that filled in last week did a great job and it was a really big effort," he said.

"The guys still need to prove their fitness but I think Stevie is looking good and Kingy is confident.

"We've got a long week this week, which is a bit of a different turn around than usual for us, so we will give them plenty of time to find their feet and fitness.

Asked if it was a 'complete win' for his side against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Toovey was frank in his assessment.

"Ohhh not really, I don't think so," he said.

"It was blowing a gale and raining, under those conditions it was a pretty good effort by both teams to complete sets.

"But we'll need to improve more if we are a chance to win the comp this year."
