MELBOURNE, Sept 7 AAP - Gold Coast Titans coach John Cartwright says golden point is a "sham" and the NRL needs to get rid of it.

Cartwright's team was beaten 23-22 by the Melbourne Storm in extra time at AAMI Park, with Cooper Cronk slotting the match-winner.

The result ended the Titans' season, with the side needing victory and other results to go their way to play finals.

It was Cronk's fourth field goal attempt in golden point, while Titans five-eighth Aiden Sezer had two cracks.

But Cartwright is no fan of the concept, joining veteran coach Wayne Bennett who has long been a critic.

"Get rid of it, it's a shame," Cartwright said.

"Guys from both sides were off-side for the last eight minutes ... it's a lottery, it's a joke."

He said there was enough pressure on the referees during regular time.

"Every golden point I've seen this year is the same, it's a fair-dinkum field goal shoot-out and who can stand off-side the most."

Melbourne Storm skipper Cameron Smith also isn't a fan.

"Not when you're playing hooker and you're playing 80 minutes, just add another 15 tackles on to your tally," he said.

"I think if you can't get a result out of 80 minutes you should be happy with a draw.

"Before that rule was brought in, how many years were we playing the game where we had draws."
