GOLD COAST, Qld, June 24 AAP - Gold Coast and Melbourne are locked at 6-all at halftime in Monday's NRL clash at Skilled Park.

The undermanned Storm - missing State of Origin stars Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Ryan Hoffman - took the lead in the 20th minute when debutant fullback Ben Hampton scored the opening try of the game.

Hampton, playing in place of fellow north Queensland product Slater, was left with the easiest of tasks after Will Chambers had sent Sisa Waqa free down the Storm's right hand side with a clever flick pass.

The Titans, who dominated the game's early stages, hit back straightaway when Kevin Gordon gathered a spilt bomb by Waqa three minutes later to level the scores.

The Titans had actually crossed the Storm's line three times in the opening 20 minutes but all three efforts were ruled out for infringements.

They also nearly grabbed the lead on the halftime siren when Aidan Sezer fed a grubber into the Storm's in-goal but a flying Gordon was unable to reach the ball before it went over the deadball line.

The Titans will be hoping to improve on their completion rate in the second half after only getting through 11 of their 20 sets in the opening term.
