Trinity Wildcat's Australian half-back Tim Smith has been given a new 12-month contract after impressing in his first season with the club.

The 27-year-old, who had an unhappy spell with Wigan Warriors earlier in his career, has missed just one of Wakefield's 22 league and cup matches since joining them from Cronulla at the start of the season.

"It may have been seen as a gamble by some when we signed Tim but his experience and influence on our side has developed and evolved as the season has gone on," said Wakefield coach Richard Agar.

"I feel great pride that Timmy has been able to come to the Wildcats and rebuild his career in the game when it looked at one point that he might fade out of it.

"He's put himself in a position where other clubs have sat up and taken note but he's happy to commit to us and I know he'll continue to repay the faith we've shown in him."

Smith said: "I'm really happy with the new deal. We're definitely on the way up and I'm enjoying my time."
