SYDNEY, March 15 AAP - Benji Marshall says Wests Tigers are determined to learn the tough lessons from their round one debacle against Newcastle but he's adamant the team's approach is on the right track.

The Tigers were comprehensively outplayed 42-10 by the Knights in a very forgettable first-up effort under new coach Mick Potter.

But Marshall said the new-look Tigers were not shying away from their abject performance.

"It's not so much that we want to forget about the game against Newcastle, but learn from it," Marshall said on Friday.

"We really let ourselves down with our discipline in terms of penalties and our ball control really cost us the game.

"But our attitude was pretty good considering the amount of ball the other team had. We were lucky they didn't put 70 on us the amount of ball they had.

"There were still moments in the game when all the boys tried hard.

"But at the end of the day, it was just, not so much structures, but execution that let us down."

Speaking at the presentation of his scholarship program and the launch of an obesity awareness program, Marshall said Potter had successfully rallied the team ahead of Sunday's assignment against Penrith at Campbelltown Stadium.

"The coach has been great, he sort of put things in perspective," Marshall said.

"He said you know you are struggling if you are playing like that in round 20 or 21, but round one you still have a lot to improve on.

"If you are losing games because your attitude is bad that is when you start to worry but it was just execution.

"Our attitude in the team was fine it was just the way we executed so for us if we can learn from that we will be on the right track.

"And where better to start than our first home game at Campbelltown Stadium this Sunday."
