SYDNEY, May 30 AAP - Laurie Daley admits telling John Sutton he'd lost out to Josh Reynolds for the NSW 17th man spot was one of the hardest things he's ever done.

Canterbury five-eighth Reynolds was selected on Thursday afternoon to replace Kurt Gidley for next Wednesday's State of Origin opener at ANZ Stadium and Daley said Sutton was bitterly disappointed by the decision.

The pair trained against one another in the morning before Daley and chief selector Bob Fulton came to the decision after lunchtime.

"I've never had this type of experience before, telling someone they are so close but so far," Daley said.

"I really felt for John and you could see the reaction in his face.

"He was trying to stay as positive and as upbeat as he possibly could. It's never nice or something you like to do."

Reynolds' reaction was predictably the opposite to Sutton's and Daley said the 24-year-old's ability to cover the hooking role is what got him over the line.

"You talk to one guy and then talk to another and they become quite emotional," he said.

"It took us a while to come up with Josh because John has some attributes we thought we may have been able to use.

"But to have cover at hooker and not to make too many disruptions if something went wrong with Robbie (Farah) swung it in Josh's favour.

"To see his reaction to the news really was quite something."

While Daley was informing sections of the media of the decision on Thursday at an impromptu press conference at the team hotel in Coogee, social media went into overdrive claiming Sutton had been given the nod.

The NSWRL mistakenly tweeted Sutton's selection without the knowledge or consent of the NSW team media manager, the NSWRL later issuing a statement saying it had erroneously picked up the information from other news reports without confirming it was correct.
