GOLD COAST, Qld, June 24 AAP - Melbourne star Gareth Widdop faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines after suffering a dislocated hip in Monday's NRL loss to Gold Coast.

The England international cried out in agony and punched the Skilled Park turf after suffering the injury in the second half of his team's 18-12 loss to the Titans.

Widdop was tackled by Titans duo Ryan James and Albert Kelly and instantly clutched at his leg after his knee appeared to catch in the turf as he went to ground.

The 24-year-old was stretchered off the field and taken by ambulance to the nearby Robina Hospital.

It's not clear at this stage how long Widdop will be out for with Storm coach Craig Bellamy saying a lot will depend on whether it was solely a dislocation or if any fractures had also occurred.

The injury is a blow for the Storm with Widdop a key part of Melbourne's hopes during the State of Origin period when key trio Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater are all missing.

"It's going to hurt us anyway, even when the other guys are there," Bellamy told reporters.

"He's a real good player and he's probably been taking a little bit more control in games the more experience he's got.

"We'll certainly miss him without a doubt ... he's a class player in his own right."
