MELBOURNE, June 11 AAP - Ryan Hinchcliffe's first job as the stand-in Melbourne Storm skipper will be to lay down the law at training after a sub-par performance in their last NRL outing.

In their clash with Gold Coast next Monday night Hinchcliffe will take over from usual captain Cameron Smith, who along with Billy Slater and Ryan Hoffman is absent on State of Origin duty.

The hard-working hooker admitted it was a tough time to take over as Storm leader following their 32-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters last round.

That disappointing result came on the back of 41 missed tackles, which Hinchcliffe said they couldn't afford to repeat.

The usually high-flying Storm are now eight and eight for the season to sit ninth.

"We're going through a tough spot at the moment but you can go either way. You can say, 'It's all too hard ' or you can dig your toes in and work really hard and claw our way out of it," he said.

"That's what we're about and for us it's about working hard."

That starts with training this week with Hinchcliffe saying the team needed to train as they intended to play.

"We need to focus on getting our jobs done and we missed too many tackles and when we had the ball we made too many mistakes from things we wouldn't normally try and do.

"We'll definitely be a little bit harder on everyone this week and when there's an error at training we'll be pulling everyone up and making them accountable so hopefully we'll get a better result next time."

Meanwhile, Melbourne have moved to plug their problematic five-eighth role by signing Wigan's Blake Green.

The 27-year-old will join the club in November after agreeing to a two-year deal.

Green, who was man of the match in Wigan's Super League grand final win last October, joined Wigan from Hull KR in 2013 having previously played for NRL clubs Canterbury, Parramatta and Cronulla.

He is currently sidelined with a ruptured bicep.
