SYDNEY, September 13 AAP - South Sydney made the most of their chances before turning up the defensive heat to have reigning premiers Melbourne on the ropes with a 14-0 halftime lead in Friday night's NRL qualifying final.

Bidding for a preliminary final berth, the Bunnies scored the only two tries of the period through Dylan Farrell and Jeff Lima, with Adam Reynolds adding a penalty goal to push Souths out by more than two converted tries.

The Rabbitohs' opener came against the run of play when Justin O'Neill lost the ball near his own line - good vision from Reynolds finding an unmarked Farrell out wide.

Melbourne's discipline went out the window as they conceded five straight penalties, much of which was spent on their own line as they eventually paid the price when Lima barged over.

Souths prop Roy Asotasi was placed on report for a questionable crusher tackle on Jason Ryles, the Bunnies defence withstanding a relentless onslaught from the Storm.

Sisa Waqa went closest for the visitors but video review was unable to overturn a no-try ruling, with Farrell doing well to get his body under his opposite winger after he had reeled in a Cooper Cronk kick.

Cameron Smith missed a long-range penalty goal after the halftime siren which could have cut the margin to 12 points.
