SYDNEY, August 26 AAP - Cronulla have stunned ladder-leaders Sydney Roosters to take a 26-0 lead to halftime in their Monday night NRL clash at Remondis Stadium.

Humbled 40-0 by the Roosters just a matter of weeks ago, the Sharks were on the verge of an amazing turnaround - three tries in the last nine minutes of the half sending the home fans into raptures.

The Roosters had no answer to a Cronulla onslaught which started with a Todd Carney 40-20 from the opening set of the game.

Captain Paul Gallen touched down on a Carney grubber to make it 6-0 in the third minute, before the home side ramped up their defence as the Roosters returned fire.

Ill-discipline cost the visitors however, Sonny Bill Williams giving away four penalties of his own, but he was unlucky to be charged with a strip on Ben Pomeroy on the half hour.

It proved a crucial call with Michael Gordon kick-starting the avalanche off an Anthony Tupou inside ball.

Carney secured a repeat set from which Jonathan Wright scored, a one-on-one strip by Chris Heighington on Shaun Kenny-Dowall ten metres out from his own line completed the rot as the back-rower ambled over.'
