SYDNEY, May 9 AAP - Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan has praised Todd Carney for showing loyalty to the NRL club after he signed a new five-year contract on Thursday.

Carney ended any speculation about his future by re-committing with the Sharks despite interest from St George Illawarra, the Warriors and Penrith.

The former Canberra and Sydney Roosters star was close to signing a new agreement with the Sharks just before the start of this season but negotiations were put on hold after the ASADA investigation engulfed the club.

Carney is the latest big-name off-contract playmaker to come off the market and the 26-year-old, who is well settled in the Cronulla area, said he's delighted to be staying put.

"I'm happy to have made the decision to be staying at the Sharks and to be settled for the next five years," Carney said.

"We have a strong playing group here and I'm excited to have the chance of working with them."

Flanagan has developed a strong relationship with the NSW five-eighth after offering him a lifeline following his sacking by the Roosters before the start of the 2012 NRL season.

Although he always maintained Carney would stay, he said he had to allow the 26-year-old the time to weigh up his future.

"He was offered big money contracts at other clubs so we had to let the negotiation process run its course," Flanagan said.

"His decision is a great show of loyalty towards the club and is also an expression of faith in the long term future of the Sharks."

Sharks general manager of football Steve Noyce was also pleased to have finally completed the negotiations and get Carney's signature on a contract.

"Todd and his manager David Riolo had a big decision to make," Noyce said.

"We understand they had to test the market and we thank them for the professional manner in which the negotiations were conducted."
