The German rugby league season kicks off this Saturday (23/02/08) at 1.00pm, with the annual Heidelberg nines tournament.

Teams taking part include:

Rohrbach Hornets- formerly Heidelberg Sharks, who have been in existence since 2005. Look set to be a strong side fielding national team players Hottenrott, Bastian, Frera, Glaser and Rehm. In addition they are coached by national team coach Uwe Jansen.

Karlsruhe Raiders- founded in 2008, it will be there first full competition and are expected to play hard and quick, with the influence of some French flare in the squad.

Pforzheim Ravens- another newly formed team with the majority of players coming from university, so will no doubt be a young, fit team who will have a point to prove to the older, more established players.

Rheinland Warriors- founded in 2007, Rheinland will have the benefit of a coach with rugby league experience in Bob Doughton, a native of Salford. In addition they will have some Australians present who will add some much needed experience. Possibly the dark horses for the tournament.

Competition details: Heidelberg 9's, 23.02.08, kick off 13:00 HTV Platz Carl-Boschstr.10-15, 69115 Heidelberg

This will be the first domestic step for German Rugby League and plans are also in progress for a national cup & 2 regional leagues over the summer, which should see additional clubs join the fray including players from:

Bad Reichenhall
Rammstein
Nurnberg
Frankfurt

In addition to the domestic developments, there have been some significant movements on the international scene.

Rugby League Deutschland is pleased to announce Uwe Jansen and Dan Stocks as the coaching team in 2008. Germany was previously coached by Uwe Jansen and has enjoyed much success by winning 3 out of 4 games under him. Jansen is a very popular figure in German Rugby League and lives in Heidelberg, where he is also the coach of Rohrbach Hornets. Jansen has also played for Germany against Estonia in 2006 where he also grabbed a try in the 24-38 win.

Dan Stocks is a product of Hemel Stags, but has been a player for Germany since the beginning in 2005. Dan qualifies for Germany through his Grandma and has been a great leader, both on and off the field since 2005. Dan is also a Coach and conditioner for London Skolars in 2008 and is highly regarded at the professional club. With Dan's Rugby League experience, alongside Uwe Jansens knowledge of German Rugby, it is hoped Germany will keep on improving.

As well as this, Rugby League Deutschland will be running a Deutschland A-side/Student team. Rheinland Warriors coach Bob Doughton will take up the manager role and German Exiles & Telford Raiders regular Paul Shezhofner will take on the coaching role.

The a-side/students team will give the younger and less experienced players an opportunity to play a good standard of rugby and provide some much needed game time. It will also give players an opportunity to impress the national coaches and put pressure on the national team players for positions.

This promises to be the busiest and hopefully most successful year for German Rugby League to date, however non of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of everyone involved.
