SYDNEY, Aug 19 AAP - A penalty on the stroke of halftime from James Maloney has given the Sydney Roosters a 14-6 lead against the Wests Tigers in Monday's NRL clash at Allianz Stadium.

It took just four minutes for Trent Robinson's side to break the deadlock when Jake Friend continued his career-best form with a smartly-taken try after just four minutes.

The former bad boy hooker darted out of dummy-half and showed great footwork to dance his way to the line.

But the Tigers responded swiftly when veteran winger Lote Tuqiri rolled back the years in his first match since round 18 in 2012 when he glided over the line after latching onto a sumptuous flick pass from James Tedesco.

Despite their lowly status on the ladder, the Tigers more than matched the leaders only to let themselves down with some basic errors.

Tedesco almost gave his side the lead when he hauled in a Benji Marshall kick behind the posts, only for his foot to brush the line.

But the Roosters showed their class in the 25th minute when Sonny Bill Williams' strength helped him lunge over the line to touch down one-handed despite being under pressure from three Tigers players.

Former Tigers back-rower Luke O'Donnell, a player with a history of disciplinary issues, was penalised following some pushing and shoving with Keith Galloway that saw players from both sides getting involved.

However, Marshall was unable to find touch from the resulting penalty to let the Roosters off the hook.

O'Donnell, still smarting from his earlier dust-up, then found himself lucky to still be on the field after lifting Tim Simona into a dangerous position and dumping the young centre on his back.

The ex-NSW star was placed on report for his actions and could find himself in hot water with the match review committee on Tuesday.
