SYDNEY, July 1 AAP - The Sydney Roosters produced a mammoth defensive effort to hold out Manly and take an 8-0 lead to halftime in Monday night's NRL match at Allianz Stadium.

The Sea Eagles dominated possession and field position - at one stage, enjoying eight straight sets on the Roosters line - but had nothing to show for it against an outfit showing all the defensive qualities of a premiership contender.

The home side scored tries via Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Jake Friend, the latter showing the defensive inequalities between the two sides as the Roosters No.9 waltzed over in a 20-metre run from dummy-half.

The only negative for the home side was the goalkicking of fill-in kicker Boyd Cordner, who badly sprayed both attempts in the absence of regular sharpshooter James Maloney.

Manly had their chances late to get on the board when Brett Stewart spilled a loose ball five metres out from the Roosters tryline, before Jamie Buhrer lost the ball over the line after the halftime siren courtesy of a desperate Aidan Guerra tackle.
