SYDNEY, Sept 28 AAP - The Sydney Roosters have one foot in next Sunday's NRL grand final with two tries on the stroke of halftime giving them a 12-4 lead over Newcastle.

Giant winger Daniel Tupou leapt above Akuila Uate in the 32nd minute to give the home side the lead in Saturday night's preliminary final after James Maloney had Tyrone Roberts has exchanged earlier penalties.

Michael Jennings extended the Roosters advantage two minutes later after the referees missed a forward pass from Sonny Bill Williams to Dylan Napa in the build-up.

Trent Robinson's side had the lion's share of possession but were thwarted by some magnificent defence from the Knights, with Robbie Rochow and Jeremy Smith combining to deny Maloney a certain try in the opening 10 minutes.

But the play was marred by Smith who was placed on report and conceded a penalty after he used his hand to press down on the five-eighth's head after the tackle had been made.

A Roberts penalty levelled the scores after the Roosters defence were adjudged to be offside following a smart break from Jarrod Mullen and the young halfback converted from close range.

The game was delayed for more than five minutes when Knights veteran Danny Buderus was stretchered off on a medicab after coming off second best when trying to bring down Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

Buderus, who will retire at the end of the season, was taken to hospital in a neck brace as a precaution after being knocked unconscious following the accidental blow.

Roberts reduced the deficit with his second penalty from the final play of the half after Dane Gagai was adjudged to have been stripped of the ball having burst into the Roosters' half.
