SYDNEY, July 5 AAP - Veteran forward Luke O'Donnell admits he opted to return to the Sydney Roosters because they presented him with the best opportunity to ensure he finished his career with an NRL premiership.

O'Donnell returned to Australia this year following two seasons with Super League outfit Huddersfield Giants, and while he is keen to extend his stay with the club beyond 2013, understands that 2012 could be the campaign he finally ends his title drought.

Having spent 12 seasons with Balmain, Wests Tigers and North Queensland, the closest the 32-year-old ever got to lifting the trophy was in 2005 when the Cowboys went down to the Tigers in the grand final.

Now, with the Roosters flying high in second spot on the ladder heading into the final third of the season, the former NSW Origin and Australian representative is again within sight of the final accolade to complete the CV.

"It definitely made the decision a lot easier coming to a club like the Roosters," O'Donnell said of the club's premiership prospects, having fielded offers from a number of NRL clubs.

"Obviously there's a lot of history here and I was well aware of the playing staff as well.

"I know I'm coming towards the back end of my career.

"I want to finish as a winner, and the Roosters I definitely thought were heading in the right direction."

After a slow start, which included a one-week suspension for breaching club policy, O'Donnell has started finding his feet and a new position at the club.

Having come off the bench in six of his first seven games, O'Donnell was moved to the starting side at prop when Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was suspended.

When the Kiwi international returned against Manly on Monday, O'Donnell was retained - the veteran responding with a season-best 159 metres.
