NEWCASTLE, NSW, Sept 23 AAP - Injured Newcastle halfback Tyrone Roberts is expected to be right to face the Sydney Roosters in Saturday night's NRL preliminary final at Allianz Stadium.

Roberts suffered a knee injury in the Knights' upset win over reigning premiers Melbourne last Saturday night, and will receive scan results on Monday afternoon.

The 22-year-old was in good spirits at the morning's recovery session, and teammate Alex McKinnon suggested he was likely to start against the Roosters.

"I asked him this morning and he said 'it's all good. The knee is feeling good'," McKinnon said.

"Obviously he'll have to do a few little things this week, but he should be right to play this weekend.

"He had a brace on yesterday but he hasn't got it on today, so it's a big step."

Roberts has been in fantastic form for Newcastle and was one of the Knights' best against the Storm, but he hyper extended his right knee in the 77th minute.

Craig Gower would be an option at No.7 should Roberts fail to recover in time for the grand-final play off.

But the versatile veteran underwent neck surgery two weeks ago and is yet to resume contact work at training, meaning it's unlikely he would be rushed back to take on the Roosters.

The Knights will have a light week on the track, as they bid to become just the second NRL side after Parramatta in 2009 to make the grand final from seventh or eighth.

"We've got a really good buzz going around the place at the moment. Everyone's happy," McKinnon said.

"We'll probably have to lay back on training, everyone's a bit more sore and recovery is a massive key for us a the moment.

"Training is a bit different (in the finals), we're a bit more relaxed I suppose.

"We know we've got to be ready for the game, because we could be gone next week."
