SYDNEY, March 29 AAP - South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds put forward another compelling case for NSW Origin selection after master-minding the 17-12 win over Canterbury on Good Friday, the Rabbitohs' fourth-straight win to start the NRL season.

Reynolds had the ball on a string as the Rabbitohs moved to 4-0, his pin-point kick for Nathan Merritt's second half match-winner capping a brilliant display before an NRL regular season record crowd of 51,686 at ANZ Stadium.

The try was Merritt's league-best seventh of the season, and moved him to 144 career tries - good for equal tenth in the history of the NRL alongside former Rabbitoh Benny Wearing.

Merritt showed he was much more than just a finisher when he set-up Bryson Goodwin's 68th minute try.

It was a disappointing return to the field for Ben Barba, but he did give a glimpse of what could be in store in coming weeks when he touched down with ten seconds remaining off a Josh Reynolds kick.

But it was Adam Reynolds who continued pushing his case for the Blues No.7 jumper, despite NSW coach Laurie Daley having already stated that incumbent Mitchell Pearce was still his preferred option.

The Bulldogs, who lost captain Michael Ennis to concussion late in the first half, opened the scoring via Mitch Brown, but George Burgess steamrolled over four defenders to lock it up at 6-all at the break.

Reynolds set up Merritt after a clever change in direction from Greg Inglis, before Krisnan Inu was lucky to stay on the paddock after an ugly spear tackle on the Souths fullback.

Commentator Greg Alexander saying, "It's one of the worst I've seen for some time."

Goodwin then finished the deal when he crossed in the corner before Barba's late cameo gave Bulldogs fans something to smile about.
