Rugby Football League Chief Executive Nigel Wood praised the outcome and organisation of the Festival of World Cups, which came to a climax on a triple header Finals Day at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

“The Festival of World Cups has been a wonderfully uplifting celebration of international Rugby League and showcased the amazing diversity and excellence that can be found across the whole sport,” he said.

“We have seen some fantastic matches, played in a great competitive spirit, with many outcomes going right to the hooter, including the finals of both the Wheelchair World Cup and Police World Cup being decided by a two point margin. With over 7000 fans enjoying the games live as well as Premier Sports covering the tournaments it has been a great opportunity for the diversity of Rugby League to reach new audiences.”

He added, “I especially want to thank all the volunteers, who have played a tremendous role at all the venues, as well as the teams, officials and tournament organisers for their part in such a tremendous event.

“The successful Festival of World Cups has undoubtedly played its part in a momentous year for the sport in this country, with the Rugby League World Cup to follow in the autumn.”

Australia won four of the five titles for Police, Armed Forces, Students and Women, with France the Wheelchair champions.
