On the back of a ruthless first half and hat-trick of tries to centre Josh Damen the Souths Logan Magpies ran out convincing 38-26 winners over the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Piggabeen Oval.

Running with a stiff breeze at their back in the first half, the Magpies went behind after only four minutes when Tweed captain James Wood crossed out wide as the Seagulls continued their good form from last week’s second half against Mackay.

From there onwards though it was largely one way traffic, as a hat-trick to Damen and pair to rampaging prop Matt Pitman on the back of a mountain of possession had Souths Logan cruising at 26-4.

A try to Tweed Heads replacement Blake Anderson in the shadows of half time and another via a long range effort from Seagulls fullback Shaun Carney suddenly had the home side within striking distance, before a try to Souths Logan winger Dallas Anderson and another against the run of play to halfback Rhys Jack ended the comeback.

Tweed were not to be disgraced though, and two late tries helped add respectability to the score line.

After the match Magpies coach Mark Beaumont spoke of his satisfaction with his side’s efforts.

“It’s a tough road trip to come to Piggabeen, so to get the two points is very pleasing,” Beaumont said.

“We showed a lot of respect for the football, we knew we had to start well down here and we managed to do that and complete 17 of our 20 sets in the first half.”

In the home sheds coach Zimmerle was philosophical about the final result, and was reluctant to blame his side’s recent travel schedule for their disappointing first half showing.

“It has been a busy month, but strangely enough we’ve performed our best when we’ve been away from home,” lamented Zimmerle.

“We actually played pretty well in that first 10 minutes, but we ended up with only about half the amount of ball we needed in the first 40 to be competitive.”

“However the fact that were able to outscore them in the second half is a good sign for the team, both this year and into the future.”

Souths Logan Magpies 38 (Josh Damen 3, Mat Pitman 2, Dallas Anderson, Rhys Jacks tries; Nick Doyle 5 goals) def Tweed Heads Seagulls 26 (Shaun Carney, James Wood, Matt Lloyd, Cory Blair, Blake Anderson tries; Brad Lees 2, Blake Anderson goals) at Piggabeen Sports.
