Mackay Cutters chalked up their second win of the season in a close Easter Saturday encounter, triumphing over Burleigh Bears 26-12.

A tight opening half was played predominantly between the forwards, with both sides struggling to get out of their own halves.

The deadlock wasn't broken until the 18th minute, when Bears forward Louis Fanene broke the strong Cutters defence from close range. Gold Coast Titan Aiden Sezer added the extras to take a 6-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Mackay to hit back, when halfback Matt Minto spun out of a tackle and beat two defenders on his way to a try in the 23rd. His successful conversion made it 6-all, which it remained until halftime.

Former North Queensland Cowboys star Grant Rovelli stepped up in the second half, laying on two tries and grabbing one for himself in the second-half onslaught.

In the 52nd minute, the Cutters five-eighth put up a towering bomb, the Bears struggling to contain it as it found its way to second-rower Tyson Martin to score.

Hitting back two minutes later, some poor Cutters defence saw Bears halfback Todd Seymour break through and run 40m to score next to the uprights. Sezer's conversion gave them a 12-10 lead with 25 to play.

Rovelli got his team back into the lead seven minutes later, when a smart cross field kick found the hands of Michael Thomas, who batted the ball back infield for his centre Lee Williams to score.

With 10 minutes to go, a grandstand finish seemed on the cards as Mackay held a slender 14-12 lead.

It wasn't to be, as a minute later Rovelli turned on the speed to break the defensive line and step past the fullback to score under the sticks.

The Bears threw all they had at the Cutters defence in the final 10 minutes, but were unsuccessful as a lack of attacking options let them down.

On the fulltime siren, a loose ball was pounced upon by Mackay lock Jardine Bobongie, who raced 50m to score next to the uprights.

Matt Minto's successful conversion gave the Mackay Cutters a 26-12 victory.

Both teams will be awaiting the results of medical reports this week, as Burleigh centre James Stuart and Cutters second-rower Martin were carried off with leg injuries.

MACKAY CUTTERS 26 (Lee Williams, Grant Rovelli, Matt Minto, Jardine Bobongie, Tyson Martin tries; Matt Minto 3 goals) def BURLEIGH BEARS 12 (Todd Seymour, Louis Fanene tries; Aidan Sezer 2 goals) at Pizzey Park.
