The in-form Tweed Heads Seagulls have rocketed into top three contention after registering a 24-0 victory over Wynnum Manly in Sunday's round 19 Intrust Super Cup clash at BMD Kougari Oval.

It marked a third-straight win for the Seagulls, who climbed from fifth spot into fourth and now have a top three berth well and truly in their sights with five rounds of the regular season remaining.

Tweed’s desperate defence was a feature of their win yesterday, with the Seagulls from south of border continually thwarting the home team’s attacking raids.

Wynnum were twice held up over the line in the first half, while other promising attacking raids were stopped by Tweed’s swarming defence.

Wynnum Manly’s best attacking opportunity in the first 40 minutes came from a trademark break through the middle from hooker Jake Granville.

The ball was speared out to flying winger Nat Barnes but it went to ground.

It was a similar story for Wynnum earlier in the half when a long ball from Corey Norman provided an opportunity for Peter Gubb.

Tweed didn’t have any problem converting their chances into points, with clever five-eighth Tom Dawney darting over from close range for the first of the Seagulls’ five unanswered tries.

Further tries from Brad Lees and Shaun Carney put the Tweed in complete control with a 14-0 half-time lead.

Wynnum needed to be the first to score in the second half but that honour fell to the Tweed’s Cory Blair, who barged his way over with a determined run.

Tweed rounded out the scoring after a miraculous pass from Lees found the consistent Wood, who made a difficult pick up look easy to cross in the left corner.

Tireless Tweed forward Tom Kingston was the XXXX man of the match.

Tweed’s focus will now turn to Sunday’s Country Week match against the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles at Woodford, while the Wynnum Manly Seagulls will look to hit back against the Ipswich Jets at Toowoomba’s Clive Berghofer Stadium in the Channel 9 match.

Tweed Heads Seagulls 24 (Shaun Carney, Brad Lees, James Wood, Cory Blair, Tom Dawney tries; Brad Lees 2 goals) def Wynnum Manly Seagulls 0 at BMD Kougari Oval.
