Cutters hung on to record a close 24-20 win over the always spirited CQ Capras at Browne Park.

Both sides crossed for four tries each in the match - but it was the four goals from Liam Taylor which made the difference in the end.

A local derby for the two north Queensland sides - it was a much closer affair to when the two sides met for the Rivalry Round in round 7 when the Cutters ran out big 42-12 winners.

In front of their home fans, it was the Capras who opened the scoring with two quick tries - however, Mackay hit straight back with two tries of their own; including one just before halftime.

"The Capras performed very well at home as they have done for most of the season," Cutters coach Anthony Seibold said.

"They were leading 10-0 after we missed a few opportunities.

"We then hit back and led 12-10 at halftime with tries to Mosese Pangai and Grant Rovelli."

Things started well for the visiting side, scoring first in the second half to build up a healthy lead ? however, the Capras managed to keep within reach, providing a grandstand finish to the match.

"Ben Jones scored for us early in the second half so we were up 18-10 ... (before) David Milne was concussed and forced from the field and they hit back," Seibold said.

"Jardine Bobongie then scored for us to make it 24-14 before a late rally by them. Bureta Faraimo, Chris Grevsmuhl and Bobongie were our best."

Both sides will now have week one of the round 19 split round off ? before the Capras travel to Pizzey Park to take on Burleigh on Saturday, August 4 and the Cutters host the Souths Logan Magpies on Sunday, August 5.

MACKAY CUTTERS 24 (Mosese Pangai, Ben Jones, Grant Rovelli, Jardine Bobongie tries; Liam Taylor 4 goals) def CQ CAPRAS 20 (Sailosi Vatubua 2, Russell Webber, Gavin Hiscox tries; Cheyenne Motu 2 goals) at Browne Park.
