The Mackay Cutters notched their first win since round 10 today to keep their faint hopes of qualifying for the Intrust Super Cup finals alive.

Hosting the Burleigh Bears in an historic television match at Virgin Australia Stadium, the Cutters served it up to the visitors in a physical opening period.

It took a strong surge from Jason Schirnack in the 20th minute to open the scoring, with the big Cutters forward breaking through the Burleigh line from close range to ensure his team would play from in front.

Not to be outdone, Burleigh's Tyron Haynes produced a similar effort close to the line when he powered his way over for the Bears' first points shortly before half-time.

The 6-6 half-time scoreline was probably a true reflection of the even contest.

There wasn't a lot in the second half either, but the Cutters did enough to kick clear of the Bears to win 22-12.

The mere mention of the word "kick" would be enough to infuriate the Bears' Paul Bramley.

The Burleigh coach could only watch on in frustration as the Bears conceded three second half tries from short kicks.

David Milne and Michael Thomas pounced on well weighted kicks behind the line to score crucial tries.

Thomas' 62nd minute effort put the Cutters back in front after a great try from Burleigh's Jordan Rankin had levelled proceedings at 12-12.

Burleigh's hopes of a long overdue win on the road quickly evaporated when the visitors failed to clean up a Jardine Bobongie grubber kick from deep inside their own in-goal.

Mackay winger Liam Taylor swooped on the ball to hand the home team a 20-12 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

His brilliant sideline conversion rubbed further salt into the Bears' wounds.

Although out of finals contention, the Bears can play the "spoiler" role and will look to put a small dent in the Easts Tigers' campaign in next Sunday's television match.

Mackay will play Tweed Heads at Moranbah.

MACKAY CUTTERS 22 (David Milne, Liam Taylor, Michael Thomas, Jason Schirnack tries; Liam Taylor 3 goals) def BURLEIGH BEARS 12 (Jordan Rankin, Tyron Haynes tries; Jordan Rankin 2 goals) at Virgin Australia Stadium.
