The Newcastle Knights have suffered a heartbreaking 16-17 loss to the Manly Sea Eagles at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Manly found a weakness in the Knights right side defence early in the first half, with Williams running on his own, before putting the ball down behind the posts to give Drinkwater and easy shot at goal, 0-6.

With a lot on the line, it didn't take the young Knights long to hit back, doing so through Gadd who crossed just left of the posts. Smith struck the ball perfectly to tie the score at 6-all.

For the second time in the match, the Sea Eagles found space down their left side, with winger Gosling scoring in the corner to take the lead with five minutes left until the break, 6-10.

Drinkwater kicked from the sideline extending their half time lead by 6.

Manly looked dangerous early in the second half but some brillant defence from full back Mann cut the runaway attacker down before he could get to the line.

Shipard who replaced Rouse at half back, worked really hard to get the ball over in the corner, 10-12.

Smith did well to convert from the sideline tying the score at 12 a piece.

With the Sea Eagles penalised 20m from their own line, the Knights had the chance to take the lead for the first time but poor handling cost the home side.

Randell created another opportunity for his side, finding space down the right before offloading to Clarke. Clarke made a good run himself to set Clacherty up in the corner, 16-12. Smith was unable to convert.

The Knights found themselves in danger moments later with the visitors breaking through their line to tie the score at 16-all. With 14 minutes left and Drinkwater missing the conversion it was anyone's game.

With 8 minutes on the clock the Sea Eagles lined the ball up and the Knights were unable to stop their field goal attempt, 16-17.

The Knights threw everything at their opposition but could not get the points needed to win this one.
