Wests Tigers recorded a scrappy come from behind 18-14 victory over Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium in round 16 of the NYC competition.
The win moves Wests Tigers to 22 points and into fourth place on the ladder.
Newcastle opened the scoring in the 12th minute when a kick towards the Knights goal line by Wests Tigers five-eighth Jacob Miller was charged down by five-eighth Will Smith who raced 65 metres to score out wide.
Smith failed to convert his own try for a 4-0 lead to the Knights after 14 minutes.
A drop ball by Wests Tigers full-back Manaia Rudolph on his own 20 metre line saw the Knights go on the attack. Two plays later, the home side were in again when Chad Redman ran on to a short ball to score under the posts. Smith converted the try for a 10-0 lead after 18 minutes.
The score remained this way till half-time. Poor ball security and penalties cost Wests Tigers in the first half.
Wests Tigers Coach Todd Payten would have been very disappointed with the poor start to the second half, particularly after Knights full-back Kurt Mann brushed off Luke Williams and Jacob Miller to dive over in the left corner for a 14-0 lead after 45 minutes. The try was not converted by Smith.
A strong 35 metre run by Wests Tigers prop Kyle Lovett saw the hard running forward beat several defenders to dive over in the left corner in the 52nd minute. Rudolph failed to convert the try from the sideline for a 14-4 scoreline.
Wests Tigers lock Brenden Santi lost control of the ball in trying to score under the posts in the 56th minute.
A few minutes later, Wests Tigers received a touch of good fortune when a Knights player tried to go for an intercept pass on his own line from Miller but knocked the ball down. It was picked up by winger Kurtis Rowe who strolled over in the corner to score. Rudolph failed to convert the try to leave Wests Tigers trailing 14-8 after 61 minutes.
Two minutes later, Wests Tigers prop Mosese Fotuaika crashed his way over under the posts. Rudolph converted the try to make it 14-all.
The Knights looked set to score in the 74th minute through an overlap but winger Chanel Mata'utia dropped the ball unmarked just 10 metres out from the line.
Mata'utia then allowed a towering bomb from Miller to bounce on Newcastle's 20 metre line.Miller leapt high for the ball and quickly sent a pass to winger Matt Mulcahy who dived over in the corner to score for an 18-14 lead. Rudolph failed to convert the try in the 79th minute.
