SYDNEY, Aug 21 AAP - South Sydney have re-signed exciting rookie Luke Keary for the next two NRL seasons.

Keary has impressed in the red and green since making his first grade debut against Newcastle in round 12 earlier this year.

When first grade five-eighth John Sutton suffered an ankle injury against North Queensland in round 21, Keary stepped into the starting side, the highlight of his tenure being a two-try performance against the Gold Coast.

Keary also excelled for North Sydney in the NSW Cup this year and the Rabbitohs' under 20s side in 2012, being selected in the Under 20s Team of the Year last season.

He previously represented the Australian Schoolboys in Rugby Union in 2010.

Souths coach Michael Maguire says he has been impressed by the 21-year-old's level of professionalism in his short time in first grade.

"He's shown us that he is prepared to do the hard work and he's ready to build on his game, and his competitive drive fits the mould of the players we want at this club to make us successful as a team," Maguire said.

"We're happy to know that he will be with us for at least the next two seasons and we're looking forward to working with him as he works hard to establish his spot in our first grade side."

Keary says he's "over the moon" to have re-signed with the premiership heavyweights.

"I think it's a special time here and I'm looking forward to playing my role in what we are trying to build," he said.
