MELBOURNE, Aug 9 AAP - Melbourne sent an early message to South Sydney about who are the NRL defending champions by racing to a 14-6 lead at halftime in their blockbuster clash at AAMI Park on Friday night.

With superstar Greg Inglis again missing from the Rabbitohs side with a knee injury, the Storm blitzed their opponents early on by scoring two quick tries.

Souths finally answered in the 38th minute with a try to Ben Te'o to set up an enthralling second half.

Last round Melbourne crushed the Raiders 68-4, running in 12 tries, and they began this match in similarly threatening fashion.

They put Souths on the back foot when Will Chambers strolled across in the fifth minute.

Taking the final tackle, halfback Cooper Cronk flung a wild ball that was batted twice across field, ending up in the arms of Chambers with the defence stunned.

Three minutes later Melbourne scored again after Rabbitohs winger Dylan Farrell tried to work the ball from his own line but was barrelled back across by a wall of Storm defence.

He spilt the ball which was pounced on by Storm prop Jesse Bromwich.

With the score out to 12-0, Souths finally settled into the game and started to build some pressure.

But they were their own worst enemies, with errors at crucial times, while Melbourne's defence was rock solid.

Farrell saved a try when he ran down Sisa Waqa just a metre from the line, with the Storm winger messing up the play-the-all to hand the ball back to his opponents.

After a Melbourne penalty strike by Cameron Smith, Te'o's try came after he out-jumped Chambers and Mahe Fonua to take an Adam Reynolds bomb into the in-goal.
