MELBOURNE, July 5 AAP - Melbourne are on track to continue their commanding record over Brisbane after racing to a 12-0 lead at halftime in their NRL clash at AAMI Park.

The Storm have won 10 of their past 12 games against the Broncos and, with two first-half tries, look like making it No.11.

Brisbane had plenty of chances to get on the scoreboard and came desperately close on at least four occasions in an entertaining game.

The Storm, on the other hand, made the most of their opportunities.

They shocked the visitors in the fourth minute when skipper Cameron Smith, back after facial surgery, ran the ball from dummy half and found charging prop Jesse Bromwich.

The big man showed he had pace to match his power and ran 30 metres to the tryline, beating Broncos fullback Corey Norman.

Their second try came 10 minutes later when halfback Cooper Cronk's low cross-field kick caught Brisbane winger Lachlan Maranta off guard, with Justin O'Neill taking the ball and stepping through to touch down.

Veteran Storm five-eighth Brett Finch, replacing the injured Gareth Widdop, showed he was up to the task with two try-saving tackles.

The Broncos blew two chances late in the half.

Centre Justin Hodges took an intercept and combined with Maranta as they raced downfield 60 metres.

But poor communication and a great tackle by Storm winger Sisa Waqa on Maranta meant the Broncos again came up short.

In the final minute, Brisbane backrower Matt Gillett again looked a certainty but he spilt the ball as he dived across the line.
