GOLD COAST, June 16 AAP - His NRL comeback is out of the way, now Melbourne forward Jordan McLean just wants to get back to playing regular rugby league.

The 22-year-old's career has been on hold for over two months after copping a seven-game ban for the dangerous throw which left Newcastle's Alex McKinnon with a serious neck injury.

On Monday night McLean made a low-key return on the bench for the Storm in a thrilling 24-20 win over Gold Coast at Robina.

The promising forward, who spent over a week away from the club following the tragic incident with McKinnon and his subsequent ban, says it's all about the future for him now.

"Didn't feel too bad out there, I thought I would have felt worse," McLean said.

"I just want to start getting some form back and start playing some consistent footy in the NRL."

McLean's journey back has been far from smooth sailing.

After his time away, he endured a mini pre-season under the gaze of the club's conditioning staff before returning to the playing field last weekend in the NSW Cup.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said he would monitor McLean's progress and gradually increase his minutes but was delighted to have the youngster back in his team.

"His situation is quite unique I suppose," Bellamy said.

"He had a lot of time to think about that while he was out so to have his mind occupied with something else is really good for him.

"We'll slowly but surely give him more time, more minutes and hopefully he can keep getting better."
