BRISBANE, Nov 7 AAP - Already riding high on the United States' stunning Rugby League World Cup run, Terry Matterson is again toasting his success after re-signing with NRL club North Queensland Cowboys.

Matterson may be plotting an unlikely World Cup finals campaign as Tomahawks head coach but he has had time to re-sign as Cowboys assistant under new mentor Paul Green.

He joins a new-look North Queensland coaching staff that also includes fellow deputy David Furner - the Australian assistant he will line up against in a World Cup quarter-final in England on November 16.

And former Cowboys player Mark Henry has returned to the club as a member of their high performance unit.

Matterson said he had "unfinished business" with the Cowboys following controversial finals exits in their past two seasons.

"It's been a really exciting and rewarding few weeks and extending my contract with the Cowboys tops it off," Matterson said.

"It was disappointing how we finished last season so you could say there is some unfinished business there."

Matterson will return to the Cowboys once the US' giant killing World Cup run is over - most likely after their quarter-final against the Kangaroos.

Henry joins the Cowboys as assistant NRL strength and conditioning coach after spending two seasons in a similar role at the Canberra Raiders.

He played 41 NRL matches for North Queensland from 2006-08 before making 70 Super League and Challenge Cup appearances for Salford in the UK.
