SYDNEY, Aug 30 AAP - North Queensland veteran Matt Bowen has announced he will retire from the NRL at the end of the 2013 season.

The 31-year-old's future in rugby league had been in doubt, with persistent knee problems plaguing his 13th season with the Cowboys.

However the elusive fullback - who is off contract at the end of the year - is yet to decide what he will do in 2014, with a move to England's Super League giants Wigan still being negotiated.

Bowen will take up an overseas playing position or switch to off-field roles with the Cowboys and NRL, working as an ambassador and with the club's community programs, the club said in a statement on Friday.

Bowen made his NRL debut in 2001 and has since played 267 games for the Cowboys - making him the club's games record-holder and one of only four life members.

He has also featured in 10 State of Origin matches for Queensland and a single Test for Australia in 2004.

Cowboys chief executive Peter Jourdain said Bowen's career will be celebrated in their final home game of the regular season against Wests Tigers in Townsville on Saturday week.

"There is no one in the NRL who is more loved by a club's members and fans than Matthew with the Cowboys," Jourdain said.

"It's been great to see him develop from being a shy 18-year-old from Hope Vale into one of the game's best players and a father of two with his long-time partner Rudie."
