SYDNEY, Sept 20 AAP - Manly edged towards a preliminary final berth after taking a 14-6 halftime lead on the back of a Daly Cherry-Evans masterclass in Friday night's semi-final against Cronulla at Allianz Stadium.

Cherry-Evans terrorised the Sharks with a supreme kicking game, the Sea Eagles crossing for two tries after being held scoreless in last weekend's 4-0 loss to the Sydney Roosters.

Both four-pointers came off Cherry-Evans' kicks, the first a scramble which ended up in the hands of Anthony Watmough while the grubber for Kieran Foran three minutes from the break was brilliantly executed.

The Sharks, without injured playmaker Todd Carney, struggled to get in the opposition's half in the opening quarter before Luke Lewis - who was named at five-eighth on Tuesday before getting moved back to the back-row to accommodate Chad Townsend - put Michael Gordon over.

That made it 8-6 after an early Sea Eagles penalty goal, but Cherry-Evans earned his side a repeat set before his pin-point delivery for halves partner Foran.
