TOWNSVILLE, July 15 AAP - Manly have taken a 12-8 lead into half-time against a depleted North Queensland Cowboys side buoyed by the addition of club talisman Matt Bowen.

The game day addition of veteran Bowen added some security to the Cowboys backline, with the home team looking instantly more comfortable under the high ball.

It was from a kick that Manly opened the scoring in the 11th minute, with hooker Matt Ballin finishing off a good team try which started 12 metres from his team's tryline.

Winger David Williams collected a Robert Lui kick and ran across the Cowboys defensive line, off-loading to put fellow winger Jorge Taufua into space.

He threw the ball to Kieran Foran who then laid off to Ballin who crossed under the black dot.

Bowen showed the break had been kind to him, pulling out a vintage dummy five metres out from the tryline and beating three players to put the Cowboys level.

Manly captain Jamie Lyon showed some quick thinking to give the Sea Eagles the lead back 13 minutes before the break, running onto a Richie Fa'aoso off-load to again score behind the uprights.

Cowboys backrower Ethan Lowe came close to giving the Cowboys the lead back five minutes before half-time, but he was held up a metre short of scoring on his starting debut.
