MELBOURNE, Feb 20 AAP - Melbourne Storm are standing by luckless winger Matt Duffie who has suffered another NRL season-ending knee injury.

The 23-year-old has again ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo a reconstruction for the second time in two years.

He suffered the injury at training on Wednesday with scans confirming the worst.

Last year Duffie's season was cut short after only nine rounds when he required surgery on both his shoulder and knee.

At the time coach Craig Bellamy said he feared for Duffie's future in the game after such a blow and said it would be a true test of his resilience.

That double dose of surgery included a third shoulder reconstruction.

He also went under the knife in 2011 after making one Test appearance for New Zealand and then missed the 2012 grand final win with another shoulder operation.

Storm football director Frank Ponissi said the club would continue to stand by the popular player.

"Matt is a very well-liked and respected young man by all players and staff, everyone at the club is devastated for him," Ponissi said.

"He is understandably shattered, and the club will continue to support him in every way on and off the field."

Duffie was making a promising comeback, turning out for the Storm in the club's trial loss to Canberra earlier this month as well as last weekend's Auckland Nines.
