BRISBANE, Oct 30 AAP - Club legend Darren Lockyer is set to return to the Brisbane Broncos - as a board member.

The NRL's most capped player will now wear a different hat at the Broncos after joining the board as a non-executive director.

As Brisbane prepared to table a reported $1 million-a-season deal to Cameron Smith's agent on Friday, the NRL club toasted the recruitment of the Test skipper's predecessor.

"Darren has a passionate interest in business and is to be applauded for the transition he has been making in recent years from the football field to the corporate world," said Broncos chairman Dennis Watt in a statement.

"I am sure this will be the start of a long and distinguished career for Darren in the boardroom."

Since Lockyer retired in 2011 after 355 NRL games for Brisbane including three premierships, 36 State of Origins for Queensland and 59 Tests, he has successfully juggled personal business ventures with a media career.

"My entire professional rugby league career has revolved around the Broncos club and to now take that involvement to a higher level is both humbling and exciting," Lockyer said.

"My appointment to the board will result in me developing stronger relationships with our key partners, a richer understanding of our supplier arrangements, and having a more vested participation in delivering on key variables to our loyal supporter base.

"I look forward to interacting with our board of directors and most importantly, contributing to the ongoing success of the club."

It adds to what looms as a busy week for the Broncos who are set to begin a bidding war for Melbourne hooker Smith.

From Friday they can legally table offers to Smith's management but face a battle with the Storm desperate to retain the Queensland captain while Parramatta will reportedly also throw their hat in the ring.
