SYDNEY, Aug 10 AAP - A Kurt Gidley penalty on the stroke of halftime has given Newcastle an 8-6 lead over Cronulla in an evenly-fought clash at Remondis Stadium on Saturday.

Gidley scored from close range after Ben Pomeroy was placed on report for catching the Knights skipper across the neck with his forearm when being tackled.

The incident led to a minor melee between players from both sides in an entertaining opening period between two sides desperately trying to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Sharks went ahead through Andrew Fifita with 10 minutes on the clock after Dane Gagai coughed up possession by offloading into the arms of Sosaia Feki 30 metres from the Knights' line.

Feki brought the ball deep into the visitors half and then after some good work from Paul Gallen in keeping the play alive, Fifita danced his way across the line from close range.

But Gagai atoned for his earlier error just before the half-hour mark by applying the finishing touches to an exquisite offload from Akuila Uate who hauled in a pinpoint kick from Jarrod Mullen.

Gidley, back in the side following a foot injury that's kept him out of action since June, added the extra two points.

The game marked the 250th appearance for Newcastle hooker Danny Buderus - breaking the club record of 249 he shared with Andrew Johns.
