SYDNEY, June 25 AAP - Sydney Roosters prop Martin Kennedy will miss up to 12 weeks, due to a knee injury the NRL club announced on Tuesday.

Kennedy hyperextended his knee in the final minutes of the Roosters 20-18 win over Canterbury on Friday, with the injury robbing him of a possible State of Origin debut after the 24-year-old was initially named as Queensland's 18th man for Wednesday night's second State of Origin match in Brisbane.

The Roosters said Kennedy requires surgery on his knee which will determine the extent of the injury and he is expected to miss between eight and 12 weeks.

The injury is a significant blow to the Roosters who sit third on the NRL ladder and have had to cope with the loss of props Sam Moa (knee, ankle) and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in recent weeks.

Moa returned two weeks ago in the round 14 loss to the Warriors while Kiwi Test prop Waerea-Hargreaves will return from a five-game suspension for a high tackle on Manly's George Rose in Monday night's fixture against the Sea Eagles.
