Chairman John McDonald has been formally anointed as a Queensland Rugby League Life Member in recognition of his outstanding playing, coaching and administrative contribution to the code.

Having started out as a six stone representative for Queensland in his youth, McDonald has enjoyed a long and colourful association with the game that now sees him in his 16th year presiding over the QRL.

Queensland's first ever State of Origin coach and a former
senior representative for his State and Country, McDonald also earned renown as a sprinter of great ability.

He began his senior career with Toowoomba Valleys in 1960 and despite securing nine caps for Queensland and 13 for Australia, never lost touch with his roots.

To this day he resides in Toowoomba, a Member of the Order of Australia and continuing director of the Australian Rugby League and NRL Partnership Committee.

A sign of his character came in the tumultuous Super League era, when McDonald took up the position as ARL Chairman for 1997-98.

It was generally regarded that he acted with great distinction and dignity during this challenging time, helping to galvanise the game and paving a way forward.

On the developmental side of the game he has also chaired the Rugby League International Federation and been a steering member of the ARL Foundation (now ARL Development).

Among his many other accomplishments in the game, McDonald has been a coach for Toowoomba, Queensland Country and Queensland Residents and is a previous chairman of QRL South West Division.

He is the current chairman of Crushers Leagues Club and briefly chaired the Gold Coast Chargers.

External to rugby league McDonald is the managing director of Cracker Print and Paper, chairman of the Toowoomba Sports Ground and chairman of the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland.

During his playing career he also represented New South Wales three times before the Origin era, but given his otherwise impeccable record we can overlook that.
