WELLINGTON, March 7 AAP - Former Warriors assistant coach Tony Iro is in contention to take over at UK Super League club Salford.

Iro turned down assistant roles at the Warriors and the Sydney Roosters after missing out to Matthew Elliott for the head coach job at the Auckland club.

Now New Zealand Rugby League's high performance manager and assistant coach of the Kiwis, Iro has been suggested as a possible contender to coach Salford, who sacked Phil Veivers five games into the UK season.

Owner Marwan Koukash says Iro will be in his sights to take over at the club, which sits bottom of the league with one win.

"We do not even have a shortlist as yet but (former Great Britain boss) Brian Noble will be considered for it along with Tony Iro," he said.

Former Kiwis and Manly coach Graham Lowe was appointed football director at Salford last month.

Australia coach Tim Sheens has also been linked to the club.

Salford's head of youth development Alan Hunte has been placed in charge temporarily.
