Winger Jermaine McGillvary scored two early tries as Huddersfield Giants powered back to the top of Super League with a fifth straight win.

The academy product, 25, went over in the second minute against a weakened Salford City Reds side from Scott Grix's kick into the right corner.

And then, three minutes later, Danny Brough collected his own kick through and passed to Leroy Cudjoe, whose quick off-load put McGillvary in.

McGillvary, who scored against Salford in a 21-20 defeat in March, has bagged seven tries in his last four outings and has 17 touchdowns for the season.

Brough and Aaron Murphy then combined to put David Faiumu through before Brett Ferres scored one and made another before the break.

The former Bradford Bulls ace acrobatically stretched for the line on 32 minutes and supplied the killer pass for Joe Wardle to dive over on half-time.

Brough, who signed a new five-year contract last week, kicked four goals to leave Huddersfield with a healthy 28-0 interval lead.

Salford, hit by injuries and suspensions, recalled youngsters Jordan Walne and Jordan Davies from loan spells at Workington and Barrow for this encounter.

But the visitors were hardly in it in the first half, though strong defending after McGillvary's opening double salvo stopped the Giants running riot.

A rare Salford attack on 25 minutes saw Grix show great skill in holding on to a high kick from Marc Sneyd in a swirling wind.

Grix, with Salford's forwards waiting to pounce near the line, dropped the ball but caught it between his knees as he fell backwards.

A clever mid-air off-load to the covering Murphy completed a remarkable escape that drew applause from both sets of fans.

Brough made it 34-0 on 47 minutes by racing for the line after selling the Salford defence a clever dummy from Wardle's pass.

The Giants skipper converted and has now amassed 32 goals and three tries in his last five outings, taking his tally for the season to an impressive 271 points.

Niall Evalds got the visitors a consolation score on 56 minutes, though Sneyd missed the resulting conversion attempt.

Huddersfield debutant Josh Johnson, a 19-year-old prop, piled on the misery for Salford by setting up Jamie Cording for a touchdown on 62 minutes.

The inexperience of Brian Noble's side showed 10 minutes later when Gareth Owen should have put Ashley Gibson in the clear.

The 21-year-old hooker burst through, but he dithered and then turned inside instead of passing outside to the unmarked Gibson and was tackled.

Cording's second try of the afternoon, two minutes from time, completed the scoring and nicely set up Friday's mouth-watering clash with Wigan Warriors.
