A superb first half effort by the Canberra Raiders National Youth Competition side has laid the platform for an 18-14 win over the North Queensland Cowboys at 1300 Smiles Stadium.

The win by the Raiders means that the Green Machine have not tasted defeat since round one and have consolidated a position in the top eight.
As mentioned earlier the win was derived from a marvellous first half by the Raiders.

Canberra registered six line breaks to the Cowboys one, nine offloads to three and 709 metres to 451 on the back of a 64% possession rate.

The Raiders forwards, namely Mitchell Barnett and Jeff Lynch completely dominated their North Queensland counterparts and enabled the likes of Jack Ahearn, Brenko Lee and Anthony Milford to wreak havoc in the backline.

Ahearn’s ball playing talents were instrumental in the opening try of the match after the talented five-eighth threw a cut out ball for Jeremy Hawkins to cross in the 6th minute.

Canberra then extended their lead after terrific ball movement by Ahearn, Milford and Jordan Worboys enabled Brad Smith to cross out wide in the 22nd minute. Milford converted from the sideline.

The Raiders then looked to have gone back-to-back off the kick off after Mitchell Barnett latched onto a Jordan Worboys bomb however the Cowboys issued a Captain’s Challenge and the try was disallowed after it was found that Hawkins had previously knocked the ball on.

That did not deter the Raiders and they stretched their lead out again before halftime when Brenko Lee barged over in the 36th minute from close range.

Milford was particularly damaging in the first half with former Cowboys great Aaron Payne remarking “He’s a fantastic talent isn’t he. It’s the first time I’ve seen him play live and he’s certainly an exciting prospect for the future.”

Alas, the Raiders were not as dominant in the second half and subsequently invited the Cowboys back into the contest on the back of a 8-1 penalty count in favour of North Queensland.

Matthew Bowen’s nephew Javid Bowen was particularly damaging to the Green Machine in the centre scoring a double.

North Queensland fought back to draw 14 points all in the second half until Brenko Lee continued his strong game and created space for Jonathon Kent.

Kent then did extremely well acrobatically to plant the ball down for the match-winner in the 72nd minute.
