The Penrith Panthers Holden Cup team have bounced back to winning ways with a hard-fought 25-18 win over St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Jubillee Oval. The win was set up on the back of a classy display by the Panthers halves with Toby Evans and Nikko Roberts playing starring roles.

The match started well for the Panthers with the returning Kieran Moss slicing through from 25 metres out and racing past the Dragons fullback to get the Panthers on their way. Moss who has spent time playing in the NSW Cup immediately showed how dangerous he is when half an opportunity arises. Nikko Roberts assumed the kicking duties and he added the extras.

After some sustained pressure by the Dragons they were rewarded with a try out wide. The Panthers failed to wrap up the ball and an offload followed by some quick hands saw the Dragons draw level after a sideline conversion was added.

Going into the back end of the half the Panthers halves really stamped their authority on the match. Toby Evans did it all himself from close range and strolled over for an easy try after taking the line on. Evans was again on the scoresheet with his second try not long after. The Dragons were on the back foot after some good play by the Panthers forwards and when Roberts put a grubber in, a determined Evans chased hard and managed to get the ball down just centimetres short of the dead ball line. Roberts slotted the conversion and at the break the Panthers led 18-6.

The Panthers started the second half poorly, first failing to find a kicker on the last tackle in their first set and then on the next set they turned the ball over inside their 20m zone. Offering the Dragons great field position, they made the Panthers pay and brought the game back to just a one converted try margin. Needing to knuckle down and restore a more comfortable lead the Panthers lifted their intensity and a Iszah Yeo break was turned into points when he found a supporting Kieran Moss for his second try of the game.

Just as they had done earlier, the Dragons refused to give up and they scored from close range to be back within striking distance. Heading into the final 15 minutes of the match Toby Evans again stood tall with his kicking game first class. He had the ball on a string and earned his team numerous repeat sets. Although they failed to cross the line again, an Evans field goal with just minutes remaining sealed the win for the Panthers.
