GOLD COAST, Oct 29 AAP - Ex-New Zealand winger Kalifa Faifai Loa doesn't think the presence of former coach Neil Henry will derail his attempt to rebuild his NRL career.

After playing just seven games for North Queensland in 2013, the 23-year-old asked the club for an early release from his contract.

On Monday he joined Gold Coast on a two-year-deal, admitting his time with the Cowboys hadn't ended well and he was keen for a fresh start.

The move means Faifai Loa will link up again with Henry, after the former Cowboys coach joined the Titans as an assistant coach in the off-season.

But Faifai Loa isn't treating the presence of Henry on his new team's coaching staff as a problem.

"I had talks with them (Titans) before he was even coming," he told reporters on Tuesday.

"What a weird way of him and me coming here in the same year.

"He was good to me last year so hopefully he is this year as well. I don't blame him for him not playing me last year, hopefully it's a new story."

Faifai Loa, who played two Tests for the Kiwis in 2011, said he's come to the Gold Coast for a fresh start as he tries to get his career back on track.

He's not expecting to immediately oust incumbent wingers David Mead and Kevin Gordon at the Titans but is hoping to find a spark after a tough time in Townsville.

"Everyone here wants to play NRL and get up to that scratch so hopefully I can once again," he said.

Faifai Loa joins Maurice Blair, Siuatonga Likiliki, Paul Carter and Christian Hazard as new Titans recruits in 2014.

The Titans begin pre-season training next Monday.
