SYDNEY, May 14 AAP - NSW winger Jarryd Hayne admits he hasn't had his head right during an indifferent start to the NRL season for Parramatta - but is ready to make amends for the Blues.

Hayne will go into the State of Origin opener with question marks hanging over his efforts for the Eels - his lack of consistency seen as a major factor in the club's 1-9 record.

Apart from a golden run of form which propelled Parramatta to the 2009 grand final, Hayne has saved his best for NSW, and admits the atmosphere of Origin is a major spur.

"I think it brings out the best in a lot of people - it's such a cut-throat game," Hayne told AAP on Monday.

"It can either bring out the best or bring out the worst.

"It's the adrenaline - that's what gets you the most and takes you to that next level."

Hayne dismissed injury as a reason for his lack of consistency, rather labelling the issues more mental.

"I just haven't had my head straight and focusing on what I need to do for the team and getting the best out of myself," he said.

Asked what was causing the mental issues, Hayne said:

"One and nine - I think it's pretty evident what the issue is.

"Losing plays on your mind, no-one likes losing."

Now in camp with the Blues, Hayne is hoping the change of scenery helps free his mind.

He is also looking forward to the free reign he is given from the wing - a position from which has has twice won the Brad Fittler Medal as NSW player of the series.

"Playing wing for NSW is like playing an NRL game at fullback," Hayne said.

"The amount of work you do and the freedom, you get, I enjoy it."
